About the Kaluakoi Golf Course
Sad News - As of April 5th, 2008 the Kaluakoi Golf Course is Closed
With only nine days notice the Molokai Ranch closed down and ceased operation of all of it's facilities on April 5th, 2008. It was a terrible economic blow to the people of Molokai with 120 people loosing their jobs. The Ranch was the island's largest private employer. The owner of the Ranch (Singapore-based owner GuocoLeisure Ltd.) was involved in a dispute with the people of Molokai over the development of La'au point. La'au point is an undeveloped point on the west end of Molokai that the Hawaiian people consider sacred. Apparently Quek Leng Chan executive chairman of GuocoLiesure (reported one of the 10 richest men in the world) closed the Ranch and fired all the employees on such short notice because of this controversy. The Ranch operated a small (about 25 rooms) but very upscale hotel, restaurant, the island's only movie theatre, a small grocery, and a service station that was open only 4 hours a day. The Ranch owns about 35% of the land on the island and has a sizeable cattle operation. It also owned and operated the Kaluakoi Golf course that adjoins the Ke Nani Kai condos.
In the late 80s or early 90s the golf course was purchased by foreign investors who reportedly paid over $500 million dollars for the course. As was the case with many of these foreign investments in golf courses and hotels that were made at that time, the price proved to be far too much. In 2001, the foreign company went under and the golf course was completely closed down for over a year. The Molokai Ranch purchased the course (reportedly for only 5.5 million dollars) and reopened it. In late 2003 the front 9 was reopened and on September 11th, 2004 the back nine reopened.
The Kaluakoi Hotel (which has all the units down around the pro shop and appears to be close to the beach) is closed and there currently are no plans to reopen it that I am aware of. There have been recent plans to reopen the Hotel next to the golf course but nothing has been done so far.
Ironwood Hills Golf Course - This is a local 9 hole, par 35 golf course located near the town of Kualapuu on the island of Molokai. It remains open to the public. This golf course was built in 1928. While it does not have the scenic oceanfront fairways of the Kaluakoi Golf Course, it is a challenging golf course in the lush green hills of Molokai.
